Night 1

... and we're off on the roller coaster.

What a group of hotties! I am pleasantly first impressioned.

Michelle is super-confident. She controlled the opening conversation with her eyes, in a good way. Argh. Never mind. Watched the rest of the show and she falls apart. Women, why do I even try to understand thee?

A different Ali may have said "I'm the king of the world!" but this Ali's in the running for queen of mine. She reminds me a bit of Rebecca from "Brothers and Sisters," which is a good thing. I even like the raspy voice. I know, that's weird. I decided I liked girls in overalls during college cuz one attractive one wore them all the time. Can't really defend that.

Tenley's a sweetheart. I remember hearing in a junior high lyceum one time that 98% of marriages between 2 virgins do not end in divorce, so whether you believe that or not, I give her my sympathies and best wishes about getting over the tough times. No one deserves to be cheated on. She comes across as quite meek, which may not survive this kind of house too long.

Ashleigh - YOU are the reason the scale goes to 10. Waiting ... waiting ... ladies, are you still reading? I'm just messing with you. Yes, I do find her cute, but would think most girls would cringe at the valley girl-ness. Was that a dress or a sarong?

"Love is more powerful than flying." Thanks, Jake. Just so you all know, I also find love more powerful than public accounting. I'm guessing I know guys who find love more powerful than media relations, teaching, and the actuarial sciences as well.

Christina - Why make enemies before the game begins with the parting gifts? Bad, dumb move. Major b-word points.

Air National Guard Captain Elizabeth REALLY impressed me. She seems to have a great personality, is self-aware, funny, and has a warmness I find quite appealing. I might even move her into the #1 slot. And then he let her go! Boo! He made some questionable decisions with the roses.

I got a roommate who has been to Geneva, but he would like to spend a night in "Vienna" sometime. Ayo! (Rim shot)

Corrie, you get the "deer in the headlights" freak-out points for the "What do you think about Kissimmee (sounds like "kissing me") line. Reminds me of the recently released beer commercial with the guy struggling to say love you.

Tiana kinda looks plastic.

Channy - Landing strip joke? Pack your bags cuz your landing strip is located in flyover country.

I wanted to make fun of Ed and Jake, but they both were pretty cool tonight.

Great call with bringing out the football. You can tell a lot about a guy by the way he throws a football? Sweet. However, Jake throws like a linebacker. Sorry, shouldn't say stuff like that. Many don't know this, but quarterbacks are on the fringe of acceptance in football circles. The general public think football is all about the qb, but the guys doing the grunt work don't always appreciate the nancy boy wearing the "don't hit me" red jersey in practice and sliding to prevent getting hit. QBs must submit themselves to the culture and thank their linemen, throw a block every once in a while, and respect the body-movers. If you tell a linebacker he throws like an LB, he'll probably tell you that you hit like a quarterback. He'll probably even show you how to hit like a linebacker in short order, so just don't even go there.

I have so much more to say, but going to bed is probably a better decision at this point. Fill the comments up! I'd like to believe I'm not talking to myself. :)

  1. OK, I gave in and decided to watch this season....despite the corny subtitle of the show (On The Wings of Love? Really??). I swear, if I hear "I want to be your co-pilot" 25 or 30 more times, I'm done.

Jonah, I agree with a few of your picks. I also really like Ali. But I would say Tenley's my #1 right now. She scored major points with me when she said she wanted to get to know Jake before persuing him. And although I thought the first kiss was a little forward at the time, it ended up winning her the first impression rose! I was also impressed with Elizabeth from Nebraska.

I thought that he let a few really good girls go. Especially Elizabeth from DC, who I was also very impressed with. The only thing I can conclude with her is that she wasn't aggressive enough and he didn't think she was interested. I also liked Sheila, the pilot, and he let her go too!!

Michelle was the only girl that Ed actually called out by name when Jake asked who to let go. Why is she still there?? I guess if she didn't stay, it wouldn't be a true reality TV show.

Looks like this season will be "the most dramatic season yet" (imagine Chris Harrison's voice there). Can't wait!!

  2. Man I love this show. It's so silly but I can't... not... watch it! (double negative -- that's bad, especially coming from a copy editor)

I was pretty bummed he didn't pick Elizabeth from DC. I liked her right away. She was cute and seemed classy I also liked gappy-toothed girl in the green dress (I forgot her name!). She was cute and seemed friendly.

Tenley kind of bummed me out when she began crying about her first kiss since her divorce but since I haven't been in that position, I guess I shouldn't judge. I like her and I hope she goes far in the show.

I have to say I feel bad for Michelle in that she probably doesn't realize how nutso she came off (or how the producers made her seem). That said, I can't believe she got a rose! I guess it'll make for some good drama.

I've read some internet gossip about what's so dramatic about this season. I shouldn't have done that. Don't worry, I won't spoil it for anyone!

Oh, and I think Christina is a producer pick, not a Jake pick. She seems pretty sucky so far but good for some drama.

    Happy watching everyone!

  3. "Love is more powerful than flying." I lost a good sip of wine on that one. Thanks for the insight, Jake. I was very happy to see that gem of a statement had already received some recognition though. Nice work, Jonah.

And Grace, I too liked gappy toothed green dress girl (and also don't recall her name). She was cute!

Okay, I have to be honest and say that I don't quite yet have favorites. I know! What is wrong with me and my ability to judge? I have a feeling that will all change tonight. Yay!

  4. Okay, I strategically waited until during the show to post my first impressions so they wouldn't skew anyone doing the pool and so I would send it out before tonight's rose ceremony. Don't worry, I haven't seen it - I have it DVR-ing and will watch it tomorrow! Here we go with my first impressions on each, in order worst to first. I rank them throughout the first night on a 10 point scale which can slide as the night goes on.

    15) Michelle: 3. This one slid down slowly as she got crazier and crazier. She is missing that perfect thing in her life which she can't even define. She screams desperation and will be gone EARLY.

    14) Vienna: 4. Vienna has a big personality and big boobs, reminds me of Erica the princess from some past season, loves herself and is daddy's little girl. Not at all Jake.

    13) Christina: 5-. (oh yeah my scale includes pluses and minuses). She is the "guys' girl" who never makes friends with girls and said she is "going to win". Never a good combo.

    12) Valishia: 5. Honestly I didn't have much to say about her other than she brought soil from Texas, which was creative, but she didn't bring anything else to the table that night.

    11) Rozlyn: 6+. She has been a model for 10 years, seems extremely catty and only in it to win it. She said she has always been able to rely on looks for everything. Jake will be attracted to her but her looks will only get her so far. AND if she did make it til the end, she would get bored and squash him like a bug before the next season.

    10) Gia: 7-. Gia is pretty and has had only 3 boyfriends in her life (only? seems normal to me) but did not seem overly exciting. She has huge boobs and lives in NYC, which does not exactly scream down home Texan.

    9) Kathryn: 7-. Next to Kathryn I wrote "breath of fresh air". She looks like Carrie Underwood which is great, but the ring on her wedding finger thing was odd.

    8) Ashleigh: 7. This is the blond one who seems a bit ditzy. Nothing else to add.

    7) Ella: 7. Ella's down to earth, from the south, gave her son's airplane to Jake (which was sort of dumb I thought - his prized possession!) but not enough pizazz. Plus I think Jake might be too traditional to jump into being a step father right away.

    6) Jessie: 7. She was not overly memorable but is cute, had some corny joke and seems like an okay match for awhile.

    5) Corrie: 7+. I like Corrie! She is pretty and her Kissimee joke caught him off guard, which showed her confidence. She is not in it to win it, she's in it to see if there's a connection which is refreshing.

    4) Ashley: 8. Ashley has the broken picker, which may be endearing to Jake. If they made it to the end it'd be a cute story to tell their kids. She seems cool.

    3) Tenley: 8+. Tenley had some bad luck in her previous marriage but seems sweet, has the same values as Jake, and they could really have spark.

    2) Elizabeth: 9. Her eyes! She is really pretty. I think he would love her being a nanny and good with kids, she seems really deep and spiritual, which will lead to some good future conversations. She likes snowboarding which shows her adventurous side. I'm excited to see this one unfold.

    1) Ali: 9+. Yes Jonah, I'm with you. She is a self proclaimed hopeless romantic (which Jake will LOVE), she was refreshingly sweet, she was not dramatic at all about her lost voice, and she will really make it far. She is really likable. I found myself liking her immediately - charisma, sort of in the same way Sadie from the past related to the viewers. And I have high hopes for them! I wonder if her real name is Allison. Jake and Allison, now there's a match made in heaven. ;)
